4 Calming Nursery Wallpaper Ideas That Grow with Your Child

Decorating a nursery is one of those lovely projects where it's easy to get carried away with all the adorable baby-themed decor. But one thing worth thinking about is how quickly little ones grow, and how their bedrooms will change along with them.

A nursery doesn't stay a nursery forever!

That's one of the reasons I love soft, neutral colours and simple, classic patterns. They create a calming space for those early years but can also work beautifully in a toddler's room or an older child's bedroom, without needing to completely redecorate.

For my latest wallpaper collection, I've been exploring muted blues, earthy sage greens and warm sandy neutrals, paired with gingham, stripes, grids and lattice patterns.

Here are four ways to introduce a little pattern into a nursery while creating a space that can grow with your child.

1. Sand and Ivory Gingham – Warm & Cosy

There's something so lovely about a classic gingham check. In soft sandy neutrals, it creates a warm, cosy feel without being too busy.

Pair it with natural wooden furniture, ivory bedding and woven baskets for a relaxed country cottage look.

As your little one grows, swap the cot for a bed, introduce some colourful cushions or favourite toys, and the gingham will still feel right at home.

2. Heritage Blue Ticking Stripes – Classic & Relaxed

Ticking stripes are one of those patterns that never really go out of style.

In a muted heritage blue against warm ivory, they bring just enough colour to a nursery while keeping everything light and airy.

I love the idea of pairing blue stripes with pale timber furniture, linen curtains and soft neutral bedding.

And because stripes aren't specifically a nursery pattern, they can work just as beautifully in a bedroom for an older child.

3. Sage Grid Check – Simple & Understated

If you prefer something a little more minimal, a soft sage grid check is a lovely option.

The fine lines introduce a subtle geometric pattern without overwhelming the room, while the muted sage green works beautifully with warm ivory and natural wood.

It's also an easy pattern to style as your child's tastes change. You can introduce different colours, artwork and accessories over the years without having to change the wallpaper.

4. Monochromatic Blue Lattice – Soft & Serene

If you love blue but want something a little different from stripes, a tonal blue lattice is a lovely alternative.

Using different shades of the same muted blue creates a soft, coordinated look that feels calming without being completely plain.

Pair it with warm ivory, pale oak and natural textures for a gentle nursery palette.

Later on, introduce deeper blues, warmer accent colours or patterned bedding to give the room a more grown-up feel.

Our soft grid wallpaper in ivory and sand is a lovely example of how one simple pattern can grow with your child. Its gentle neutral tones create a calm, cosy nursery, but work just as beautifully in an older child's bedroom.

A Nursery That Grows with Them

When choosing wallpaper for a nursery, I think it's worth looking beyond those first few years.

Soft colours and classic patterns give you a lovely starting point, but they also leave room for your child's personality to develop.

Furniture, bedding, artwork and accessories can all change as they grow, while the wallpaper remains a beautiful backdrop.

Whether you're drawn to cosy gingham, classic stripes or a simple lattice, creating a nursery that feels calm, comfortable and adaptable is a lovely place to start.
